March, 21st
The second half of March is certainly coming in like a lion!
After 3 straight days of snow in row, we have received a foot or more in most areas, with the lions share of snow being most abundant in the upper elevations. The recent snows have certainly saved our season and have enabled us to get back into the backcountry again, where have been rewarded with mid-winter conditions up high.
Down low the cover is still thin and crusty with lots of hazards to be aware off. Particularly lots of open water, blown out streams and river beds, and some debris. But once you can get across these streams or rivers using all of your creative backcountry skills and start gaining elevation, the crust layer starts to disappear and the snow gets deeper and softer. And the rewards are certainly worth coming back up the skin track for multiple laps.
With continued snows today and another potential big storm coming Friday night into all day Saturday, the backcountry is primed once again for another run. Could this be out last foray into the deep woods of the Green Mountains? Only time will tell but get after it over the next 4 days as our window of opportunity is wide open now.
