The Ravine Metawool 90 Jacket is the insulated piece in Ortovox's Ravine freeride series, built for steep descents and deep powder. It is filled with 90 g/m² of Metawool, an insulation made from 80% German merino wool and 20% polylactide, under a tear-resistant, windproof shell of 100% recycled polyamide. It weighs 551 g and is made in Europe.

Wool insulation regulates moisture better than a typical synthetic fill, and Metawool gives a good weight-to-warmth ratio with a small pack size. The trade-off is that the recycled polyamide face is windproof and robust, not waterproof, so in wet snow or rain you will want a shell over it.

Ortovox rates it top marks for freeride and strong for ski touring, and that is who it is for: skiers who spend cold days on the hill, stop often and want warmth that keeps working when they sweat. If you only need a light layer for moving fast uphill, something thinner will vent better.

Loose fit to layer over fleece or under a shell, with a pre-adjusted hood, two front pockets, elastic cuffs and an elastic waist that seal out cold air.

This is our pick for the coldest powder days of the year, the jacket that keeps you warm on the chair and happy on every lap.
