The women's Backland 108 W is the wide end of Atomic's freeride touring line, and 108 is the waist. FreeTour Profile uses more wood and less fiberglass and resin for a smoother flex, over a poplar and caruba Ultra Light Woodcore. The three-dimensional HRZN 3D tip adds surface area for float, and Powder Rocker gives pronounced tip and tail rocker with camber underfoot. Lengths are 158, 167 and 176.

At 108 underfoot this is a lot of ski to put on a skin track, and the light build that makes it carryable also means it moves around more in dense, cut-up snow than a heavier resort ski would. The payoff is float, and a great deal of it.

For women touring with the descent as the objective, particularly on deep days. If your tours run long and moderate, the Backland 101 W is the more sensible width.

Take it near your resort length or slightly under, since the rocker shortens the effective edge. Three lengths keeps the decision simple.

This is the one to grab when the forecast is serious and you are willing to walk for it.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
