The Helio Carbon 95 is Black Diamond's all-round touring ski, handmade in Austria. It pairs a pre-preg carbon fiber layup with full-perimeter ABS sidewalls over a paulownia core, and measures 123-95-112mm in the shorter lengths.

Carbon and paulownia keep it light for the climb, and the ABS sidewalls and updated layup put damping back in that most ultralight skis lack. It is still a touring ski, so it will not feel as planted as a heavy inbounds ski at speed.

It is for backcountry skiers who want one ski for everything from deep days to firm, technical descents. If you ski mostly powder, the wider 102 floats better.

Early rise in the tip helps flotation and trail breaking, and the ABS tail protector has an integrated skin-clip notch so your skins stay put on the way up.

Light going up and genuinely competent coming down. This is the ski we point most tourers toward.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
