The MTN 96 Carbon builds on Salomon's MTN 95 with a 96mm waist, 128/114 tip and tail and a 16 m radius on a rocker-camber-rocker all-mountain profile. Salomon calls it the lightest wide touring ski it has made. It uses a full karuba core, carbon and basalt fibers, a titanal binding reinforcement, recycled sidewalls, a 50% recycled base and a cork damplifier set into the tip.

At 96mm it is wide enough for real freeride touring, and light enough for long days. That lightness means it will not feel as damp in chopped snow as an inbounds ski, which is where the cork damplifier and titanal underfoot earn their keep.

It is for intermediate to advanced tourers who want one ski for dawn patrols, powder days and spring missions. Skiers chasing the lightest possible setup for steep, firm lines should look at the MTN 91.

Salomon lists it at 166 to 188cm. Go longer for float, or shorter for easier kick turns and tight terrain.

This is a ski built for big days that end with great turns. Light going up, confident coming down.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
