Backland 101 W is the narrower of Atomic's two women's freeride touring skis and shares its construction with the 108 W. FreeTour Profile, a poplar and caruba Ultra Light Woodcore, the HRZN 3D tip for surface area and float, and Powder Rocker with pronounced tip and tail rocker over camber underfoot. Atomic build it with more wood and less fiberglass, metal and resin. Lengths are 156, 164 and 172.
A hundred and one millimetres is a genuine compromise width, which means it is not the float machine the 108 is and not the efficient climber a 90mm ski would be. Our view is that the compromise is the right one for most people, but it is still a compromise rather than a specialist.
For the skier who tours regularly across mixed conditions and wants one pair to do most of it. Chasing deep days specifically, go to the 108 W.
Most people run a touring ski 5 to 10cm under their resort length. Shorter again if you kick turn through tight terrain.
It is the most useful ski in the women's Backland range and the one we would put a tech binding on without hesitating.
This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule
- Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
- Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
- Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
- Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.
Adjust For
- Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
- Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
- Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
