The 109 is the waist and this is the widest ski in Atomic's Backland freeride touring line. Dimensions are 135/109.5/124 with a 19m radius at 184, on FreeTour Profile with Powder Rocker at 25/55/20. Ultra Light Woodcore of poplar and caruba, full ash inlay under the binding, fiberglass for damping, Duracap sidewalls, 87 degree side and 1.3 degree base edge. Lengths 176, 184 and 189 at 1540 grams per ski.

Wide and light pull against each other. At 109 underfoot this is more ski than is comfortable on a long skin track, and it is light enough to get knocked off line in dense chop. Few skis this wide are this easy to carry, and the camber underfoot still holds when you reach firm snow.

Buy it if the descent is the objective and the approach is the price, especially on deep days. Long mileage tours and spring corn suit the narrower Backland 102.

Three lengths keeps it simple. Take the one nearest your resort length or a touch under, since the rocker shortens the effective edge anyway.

On a storm day with a real approach, this is about as good as touring gets.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
