The Backland 86 UL is Atomic's ultralight touring ski for advanced skiers chasing classic touring days. It pairs an Ultra Light Woodcore of poplar and caruba with glass and carbon fibers, and a carbon backbone insert runs the full length of the ski as a stabilizing structure. The 157 measures 117/84.5/105 mm with a 14.2 m radius.

The trade-off of an 86 mm ultralight ski is float. It is built for efficient climbing and confident edging on firm and spring snow, and skiers who chase deep powder will want a wider Backland.

It is for touring skiers who put speed and efficiency on the skin track first and still want a capable ski on the way down. The All Mountain Rocker profile, at 15/85/0, with minimal tail rocker keeps it precise on hardpack and secure in the skin track.

The HRZN 3D Backland tip is beveled and perforated to add surface area without swing weight, and the cap sidewall keeps it light. Factory edge angles are 87 degrees side and 1 degree base. Come talk to us about length and a touring binding and skin setup to match.

We love the Backland 86 UL for long days and big objectives where every gram on the way up counts.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
