The BCA Slope Meter is a lightweight, pocket-sized inclinometer that measures slope angle from 0 to 60 degrees, with a built-in compass for checking slope aspect. It weighs about 30 g.
The trade-off with any slope meter is that it gives you a number, not a decision. It is a tool to back up your observations and avalanche training, and it is most useful when you use it every day in the field.
It is for ski tourers, splitboarders and snow study students. A metal ball in a liquid-filled tube measures the angle when you hold it perpendicular to the snow, and the curved bottom edge matches a ski pole so you can lay the pole on the slope and measure from it. The sharp edges on the back scrape wet snow off climbing skins and ice off bases.
It fits in a pack's hip belt pocket and has a lanyard attachment point.
We think every touring kit should have one, and it is a great tool for learning to read terrain in the Notch and beyond.
