Fourth generation of the Navis Freebird, and Black Crows built it as the spearhead of the Freebird line for touring skiers who are in it for the descent. Waist is 104mm, the sidecut runs 21 meters, the tip is progressive, and it comes in the green this ski is known for.

Their pitch is maneuverability and lightness without giving up big conditions, and the shape backs it up. A 21 meter radius wants you to open turns up rather than pinch them, and Black Crows claims very good grip and stability with real composure on hard pack. That last part is what a lot of skis this wide get wrong.

This is where we point most people building a one-quiver touring setup. Wide enough for a storm morning, civil enough on a refrozen skin track in April, and offered in a size range broad enough that you find your length rather than settling for one.

What we love is how little you give up in either direction. It climbs well enough that a dawn start is not a chore, and it skis well enough that you stop thinking about your gear the moment you point it downhill. Add the precut Pilus Navis skins and it is ready the morning it snows.

This guide is for alpine (downhill) skis. Ski length depends on your height, your ability, and how you like to ski. Use this chart as a starting point, then talk to us about the ski itself: rocker, width, and turn shape all change how long a ski feels.

Quick Rule

  • Beginner: ski tip around your chin. Shorter skis turn easily.
  • Intermediate: tip between your nose and forehead.
  • Advanced: tip around the top of your head, for stability at speed.
  • Expert: about 5cm longer than advanced, for hard charging and big-mountain terrain.

Adjust For

  • Go longer: heavier build, fast skiing, deep snow, lots of tip rocker.
  • Go shorter: lighter build, tight trees and moguls, uphill touring.
  • Telemark: if you want a ski for tele, we recommend going down about 10cm from the length you normally like.
