The Black Diamond Expedition 3 Whippet is a three-section adjustable ski pole with 18, 16 and 14 mm aluminum shafts, dual FlickLock adjustments and a removable Whippet attachment for extra security on steep terrain. It adjusts from 100 to 140 cm and collapses to 64 cm.
The trade-off is weight. At about 842 g, it is heavier than a minimalist touring pole, but the aluminum construction and Whippet make it a serious tool for big mountain days. On mellower terrain you can remove the Whippet entirely.
It is built for backcountry travel and big mountain missions. An extended EVA foam grip gives you a range of hand positions as the slope changes, a straight-edge scraper and rubber beak help with binding adjustments, and a PH3 screwdriver bit is built into the lower shaft.
Black Diamond suggests 100 cm under 154 cm tall, 110 cm for 154 to 171 cm, 120 cm for 172 to 182 cm and 130 cm for 183 cm and over. It comes with 100 mm powder baskets and girth-hitch straps.
We think it is a great companion for steep spring lines in the Presidentials and big days out West.
