Insulated lofoten shorts, which sound odd until you've worn a pair. GORE-TEX shell fabric with synthetic insulation, cut to layer over a base layer and under a shell pant, adding warmth across your core, hips and seat without committing to a fully insulated pant.
The logic is that your legs generate heat while your hips and seat sit still on a cold chairlift. A full insulated pant overheats you on the climb. This adds warmth exactly where you lose it and nowhere else, and it comes off in the lodge without taking your pants off.
It's a niche piece and we won't pretend otherwise. The people who use them are religious about it, and they're mostly people who ski very cold mornings, sit a lot of lift time, or run cold generally.
Worth trying on rather than ordering blind, because whether it works for you depends entirely on how you layer already. Sizing runs to fit over a base layer and under a shell, so account for both.
