The Ortovox Beast is a burly avalanche shovel built to dig fast.
The blade is strain-hardened AL 5052 aluminum with a powder coat, light and rigid, with high sidewalls, a pronounced center ridge for stiffness and a sharp, protected cutting edge. Non-slip step grooves let you drive it in with your boot.
The telescoping AL 6061 T6 handle has an oval cross section and a Hybrid Grip that combines the best of T and D grips, with a rubberized zone that stays ice-free. The handle stores in the blade so it packs well. The handle locks rapidly without pressing a button.
This is the Beast 2.3, with a 2.3 liter scoop, an 83cm working length and a weight of about 580g. The blade measures 28 x 21 x 4cm, and it is a little lighter than the full-size Beast for longer tours.
It is a great shovel for serious backcountry skiers who want maximum digging power.
