The Scarpa Zodiac Tech GTX is a lightweight technical mountain boot built on a 1.8 mm oiled suede leather upper with a GORE-TEX ePE waterproof, breathable membrane. Underfoot it uses Scarpa's Bascula Adaptive System midsole with two densities of PU and a Vibram BAS Precision outsole. It weighs about 680 g per boot in size 42.
The trade-off is that this is a mountain boot, not a hiking shoe. It is stiffer and more supportive than a trail boot, which is exactly what you want on talus and scrambles, but it takes more time to break in for casual walks.
It is made for long days on steep, rocky terrain: scrambling, exposed traverses, wet rock, spring snowmelt and shoulder-season objectives. It accepts semi-automatic crampons for snow and ice.
It is built on Scarpa's BZH last with an external molded heel counter, in EU sizes 39 to 48. Try it on with the socks you will hike in.
We love the Zodiac Tech for Mansfield ridgelines and bigger days out West: precise, protective and ready for anything the shoulder season throws at you.
